24 Hours in Recruitment - Kiefer Sutherland, eat your heart out…

The last 24 hours have been incredible…

...at 8.50am yesterday morning I dropped my kids, Eva and Charlie at school having woken up to the sound of them playing on our recently purchased electric drum kit.  I then performed stig type manoeuvres to get to Nottingham in time for the start of our monthly board meeting at 9.30am (I had at least 15 seconds to spare), which as always was solutions focused and centred around helping all of our Macildowie family members to become the best version of themselves.

After the Board meeting, our entire management community gathered for lunch at my request as I had an exciting, but not unsurprising, announcement to make and an internal communication plan to implement.

The announcement was centred on John O’Sullivan’s appointment as non-executive Chairman here at Macs.  I have personally known John for over ten years and am incredibly excited at the prospect of working with someone I consider to be “The Godfather” of The Recruitment Industry.   



As our Chairman, John will bring his unrivalled vision and business experience to bear on ensuring our continued growth and success in this exciting marketplace.  This appointment is a big deal, not just for us and John but also for the sector so I expect that you will see more coverage of the appointment in both the local and trade press in the coming days.

After lunch I drove one of our non-executives to the airport and then worked on another couple of exciting developments that we have in the pipeline, before ending my day with a curry and a well earned beer in the company of three clients that I have known for a combined 40 odd years...

The curry was a great opportunity to test my ideas on 3 guys who shoot from the hip and tell it how it is… needless to say I believe that our innovative approach to recruitment and talent solutions will give us a huge competitive edge during 2019 and I look forward to telling you more about them soon.

After watching Liverpool overturn Bayern Munich to give England a full compliment of teams making it through to the last 8 of the Champions League I hit the sack…

… waking at 5am full of anticipation of:

  1. Announcing the John O’Sullivan appointment to every member of staff

  2. Being interviewed on BBC radio Nottingham

  3. Finding out where we are placed in the Midlands Companies to Work For .


The John announcement went brilliantly well and I believe that every member of the Macs family is keen to meet him at our New Year Kick Off Conference, if not before.

The BBC interview was causing me to experience those nervous butterflies… that is until I received the notification that Macildowie have been recognised as the 3rd best company to work for in the Midlands.  We’ve actually had an awesome few months following our recent successes in both The NORA awards where we won Best Large Recruitment Agency and coming 23rd in The Sunday Times Best Small Companies To Work.

I don’t blow my own trumpet that often (I don’t think)… but this mornings’ news made me feel incredibly proud… being recognised once again as an employer who goes the extra mile with the way that we reward, recognise and develop our employees.

Whilst waiting at the BBC, I also met a Behavioural Psychologist who I will be meeting with for a coffee to discuss how we might be able to work together in the future… everything happens for a reason and meeting her was a great way to end an amazing 24 hours….
