Employers and managers – how to effectively support employee mental health

Tuesday, 1 February 2022

10:00 to 11:00

Zoom Video Call

Covid has highlighted the growing expectations employees have of their employers and, more directly, managers to look after their mental health in the workplace. The statistic that every £1 invested in mental health by employers gets them £5 back, quoted by the CBI, emphasises the business, let alone the moral basis for meeting these expectations.

However, there is a sizeable 'But' to this. Employers and managers have a notoriously difficult job at the best of times. If they are to play a constructive role in employee mental health and look after their own, they need to give them the knowledge, understanding and tools to do so.

If you are an employer who wants to make a positive impact on your employees' wellbeing, or if you are a manager looking to support your team more effectively in this critical area, this workshop is for you.

The workshop is led by Mark Evans, an experienced coach and therapist with over 16 years of experience working in business, higher education, the Employee Assistance Industry, and private practice. Mark will take you through the six stages of his transformational IMPACT model, which he has developed, supporting thousands of clients to achieve good mental health and wellbeing.

IMPACT: discover why conversations that cause poor mental health are missing essential qualities and characteristics and how to give employees the impactful conversations they need

MEANING: learn why emotions are really messages containing vital information about an employee's difficulties and challenges and how to support them in translating and responding to them

PATTERNS: develop the ability to identify the unhelpful patterns of thinking, behaving, feeling and relating underpinning issues such as employee burnout and depression

ACCEPTANCE: discover why 'Fantasy-Reality Gaps' often explain conditions like work-related stress and how to support employees to close their Gaps through acceptance

CHALLENGE: understand why the concept of challenge is intimately connected to workplace mental health and how to utilise The Goldilocks Principle effectively: not too little challenge, not too much, but just right

TRANSFORMATION: learn about the relationship between helpful and unhelpful approaches to Personal and Professional Transformation and employee wellbeing and how to get the balance right

What to expect? Mark will share his ideas and take you through some practical, thought-provoking activities. The aim is for the workshop to be interactive, but you are welcome to participate as much or as little as you want—no expectations, just a friendly and supportive space to reflect on this critical topic.
