Accountant: £32,234- £33,782 per annum + benefits (excluding the pending pay award)

The Public Sector team at Macildowie is excited to partner with Newark & Sherwood DC in their drive to recruitment an Accountant to join the team. As the largest district in Nottinghamshire, Newark & Sherwood DC they are extremely commercial, modern and forward thinking and with brand new offices at Castle House form a great place to work for potential applicants.

Based in a beautiful an extremely convenient location, just off the A46, with additional transport links (two train stations within short walking distance and a major stop on the East Coast Mainline) this role will present an attractive opportunity to an individual who either lives within commutable distance or is able to travel from further afield via these major routes.

The role will report into the Assistant Business Manager / Business Manager - Financial Services; will require the candidate to liaise with Members, Chief Officers, Officers across NSDC, Members of the Public and Third Parties and will carry responsibility for key financial services tasks throughout the financial year.

The key duties are:

  • Final Accounts Preparation
  1. Preparation of the Council's Annual Statement of Accounts and all associated duties including liaising with Business Unit Managers and External Auditors.
  • Budget Preparation and Performance Monitoring
  1. The preparation and maintenance of budget working papers; the investigation and provision of advice to Management on budget variances; preparation of all relevant grant claims and statistical returns and reconciliation of all relevant Final Account working papers to the Financial Management System.
  2. Responsibility for the production of the regulatory budgetary control reports for submission to departments and committees.
  • Financial Advice and Guidance
  1. Interpretation of non-financial reports from service areas and provision of comments on the financial impact.
  2. Preparation of reports both financial and administrative and presentation of these to Committee and ad hoc working groups as required.
  3. Provision of appropriate financial training for the Financial Services team and Officers
  4. Preparation of grant claims and returns; financial support in relation to the Council's capital programme; administering the Treasury Management function for the Council; provision of financial support to the Council's Housing Revenue Account.
  5. To be responsible for all aspects of the Council's (and other associated bodies) VAT affairs.

Key requirements:

  1. Either CCAB Qualified, Part Qualified or AAT Qualified with several years of Accountancy experience within Local Government or wider Public Sector.
  2. Proficient in the use of financial systems, Excel and Microsoft Teams and is able to work independently with minimal supervision;
  3. Team worker with a positive attitude excellent communication and presentation skills and ability to deliver towards tight deadlines;
  4. Experience of VAT would be a huge advantage.

For the foreseeable future this role will be based on site 2 days a week and allow home working 3 days a week.
