Job Description


  • Maintain the general and purchase ledger of the Society.
  • To provide assistance to the Financial Controller (FC) with regard to all accounting matters and to provide cover in the absence of the FC.
  • To assist the FC with the preparation of regular statutory returns and management information.
  • Perform financial and accounting administrative matters.
  • Provide cover for the "Accounts Administrator and Personal Assistant" in their absence.


  • Control and reconciliation of core systems to general ledger.
  • Maintain general ledger on a daily basis.
  • Learn the Provision banking system and assisting users with it.
  • Prepare monthly reconciliation statements and other relevant management information.
  • Reconcile bank, credit card and Worldpay statements and investigate any anomalies.
  • Deal with purchase ledger queries, correspondence and requests for payment.
  • Deal with bank related customer and supplier queries.
  • Issue, maintain records and reconcile petty cash.
  • Assist in preparation of regular statutory returns to the PRA/FCA and Bank of England.
  • Provide cover for end of day/end of period IT procedures.
  • Answer incoming calls.
  • To observe and comply with the Individual Conduct Rules contained in the FCA Handbook Code of Conduct (COCON).
  • Such other reasonable duties as may be required.

PERSON SPECIFICATION (Essential - E, Desired - D) - assessed at interview

Qualifications / Experience

  • Four GCSEs (or equivalent) at grade C and above including Maths and English (E)
  • Part Qualified Accountant - AAT/CIMA or equivalent (E)
  • Building society or financial services sector experience (D)
  • At least one years' experience of operating in a smaller organisation (sub 50 employees) (D)
  • Good MS Excel knowledge (D)
  • Full clean driving licence (endorsements to be disclosed) (D)

Knowledge / Skills

  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with both internal and external stakeholders including to an Executive level audience (E)
  • Capability to use Microsoft based operating systems (E)
  • Excellent organisation skills and an ability to prioritise (E)
  • Evidence of delivering accounting outputs (D)
