An overview of a Financial Controller’s daily responsibilities is to review the day-to-day operations in the finance department. This position is known as a controller position, which is a finance director's second in command.

The Finance Controller is a high-level position and is usually filled by people from management positions or that have a financial accounting background. The employees that fill these roles are usually aiming for a larger goal, typically aiming for higher positions like Finance Director, or even Managing Director. 

Qualifications and Education

As mentioned earlier, this position is usually taken to reach a higher spot, this is a senior-level role and someone applying for this position would usually have a lot of experience in finance and management sectors. Many applicants will have a degree in Mathematics, Economics, or Business alongside their accountancy qualifications from either Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), or the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW).


Being a Financial Controller includes many different skills, here are a select few:

  • Ability to multitask 
  • Ability to troubleshoot
  • Communicate effectively throughout the organisation, not just in the finance department
  • The document reports clearly, with each department understanding the main objectives to take away from it
  • Leadership skills
