The Opportunity
We are recruiting for an experienced Legal Accounts Manager / Team Leader to join a growing and ambitious professional services organisation based in Nottingham.
This is an excellent opportunity for a legal accounts professional looking to take the next step in their career, combining hands-on legal accounts expertise with team leadership responsibilities. Working closely with the Group Head of Legal Accounts, you will play a key role in ensuring compliance, driving operational excellence, and supporting the continued growth of the business.
The Role
As Legal Accounts Manager / Team Leader, you will oversee the day-to-day operation of the legal accounts function, ensuring all financial processes are completed accurately and in line with regulatory requirements.
Key responsibilities will include:
Team Leadership & Compliance
- Leading, mentoring, and supporting the Legal Accounts team.
- Ensuring compliance with SRA Accounts Rules, GDPR, Anti-Money Laundering regulations, HMRC requirements, and other relevant legislation.
- Providing guidance and training on legal accounting processes and regulatory updates.
- Promoting best practice and delivering a high-quality service to internal and external stakeholders.
Legal Accounts Operations
- Reviewing month-end bank reconciliations across office and client accounts.
- Reviewing and posting bills while ensuring VAT and regulatory compliance.
- Overseeing payment requests, receipts, transfers, and banking transactions.
- Managing inactive matters and residual balances in accordance with compliance requirements.
- Supporting the processing of legal aid claims and payments.
- Investigating and resolving legal accounts queries.
- Identifying and escalating any compliance concerns or potential breaches where appropriate.
- Providing support across the wider Legal Accounts function as required.
Stakeholder Management
- Building strong relationships with fee earners, operational teams, and senior stakeholders.
- Collaborating with colleagues across the wider finance function.
- Supporting process improvements and business growth initiatives.
About You
To be successful in this role, you will have:
Essential Skills & Experience
- A minimum of 3 years' experience within a Legal Accounts environment.
- Strong knowledge of SRA Accounts Rules and legal accounts compliance requirements.
- Previous supervisory, team leader, or management experience.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Strong Excel and legal accounting systems knowledge.
- The ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- High attention to detail and strong organisational skills.
- A proactive and self-motivated approach.
Desirable
- AAT, ILFM, or another relevant qualification.
- Experience with Legal Aid billing and payments.
- Experience supporting business growth, transformation, or process improvement projects.
