Senior Bookkeeper/Payroll Manager
Location: Corby, Northamptonshire
Salary: £40,000 - £42,500 per annum
Employment Type: Permanent
Working Arrangement: Fully office-based, with occasional flexibility to work from home
Macildowie are working with this client based in Corby, Northamptonshire to recruit a Senior Bookkeeper into a close-knit finance team within a well-established SME business.This permanent opportunity offers a high degree of autonomy and responsibility and would suit someone confident managing both weekly and monthly payroll in a compliance-led, operationally busy environment.
The Opportunity
This is a hands-on, standalone payroll role following a recent restructure. The company moved away from an outsourced bureau model and has since established a fully in-house payroll function. You'll be taking over from the individual who successfully brought this in-house and embedded robust processes. You'll continue to develop and refine those practices, while providing accurate payroll services for a headcount of nearly 90 staff.
The payrolls you'll manage consist of:
- Monthly Payroll: 50 employees
- Weekly Payroll: 50 employees (including CIS subcontractors)
Your Day-to-Day Responsibilities
- Manage end-to-end payroll processing using Sage50 Payroll
- Handle weekly and monthly payroll cycles, validating timesheets, working hours, CIS deductions and overtime
- Ensure full compliance with legislation including NEST pensions, minimum wage, tax code changes, salary sacrifice, and GDPR
- Prepare and submit HMRC returns, set up payments, and maintain accurate employee records (including NI categories and benefits)
- Coordinate with the Finance Director and support the wider finance team with reporting and reconciliations
- Assist with training and oversight of the Payroll Administrator
- Support basic bookkeeping and financial admin tasks as needed
- Use Excel (pivot tables, VLOOKUP) to verify, track and audit payroll data
Ideal Candidate Profile
- Confident using Sage50 Payroll in a sole or senior capacity
- Proven attention to detail, with a track record of resolving transactional errors
- Comfortable working across both weekly and monthly payroll cycles
- Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel, particularly pivot tables and VLOOKUP
- A collaborative approach, with the ability to train and support team members when needed
