Financial Controller
Job Description
Financial Controller
Milton Keynes | £70,000 - £85,000 DOE | Office-based role
Macildowie has been exclusively retained to recruit a Financial Controller for a growing, private equity backed business who operate in a uniquely exciting industry!
This is a brilliant opportunity for a well-rounded finance professional who wants genuine ownership. You’ll lead the day-to-day finance function, develop a capable team and work closely with the CFO as the business invests in its systems and prepares for significant growth. There’s plenty to get your hands around from the outset, and room to take on more as you make the role your own.
What you’ll do
- Lead month-end, producing accurate and timely management accounts, maintaining strong balance sheet controls and ensuring an audit ready close.
- Manage and develop a small finance team, overseeing invoicing, payments, credit control and payroll.
- Own cash flow forecasting, working capital and day-to-day treasury activity, including banking relationships and support for funding and covenant reporting.
- Oversee capital expenditure and the fixed asset register for the business’s substantial portfolio of reusable equipment.
- Lead the external audit and subsidiary statutory accounts, maintaining sound accounting policies and oversight of FRS 102, VAT, PAYE, CIS and other reporting obligations.
- Take ownership of the finance system as Microsoft Business Central is implemented and developed, improving processes, automation and reporting.
- Work with the Finance Business Partner and operational teams to understand project performance and provide useful financial challenge.
- Support the CFO with forecasting, Board reporting and shareholder information, with scope to take on greater responsibility as you grow into the role.
What you’ll need
- An ACA, ACCA or CIMA qualification, with strong hands-on management accounting and financial control experience.
- Confidence owning a month-end process, maintaining a clean balance sheet and managing an external audit.
- The ability to lead people while staying close enough to the detail to solve problems and improve how things work.
- Strong systems and Excel skills. Business Central experience would be particularly valuable, although we’re also keen to speak with people who have taken ownership of other finance systems or helped improve an ERP environment.
- The confidence to ask questions, build relationships across a business and communicate comfortably with senior stakeholders.
Experience in a project-based environment (such as construction, engineering or project-centric manufacturing) would be useful, as would exposure to a private equity backed business. The priority, though, is finding someone with the capability and ambition to grow with the role. If you’re making your first move from practice and can demonstrate strong practical experience, we’d welcome a conversation.
The role is based in Milton Keynes, with minimum four days per week in the office. In a close-knit, operational business, being there matters: you’ll get to know the people, the projects and the equipment behind the numbers.
If you’re looking for a Financial Controller role where you can run a strong finance operation, with breadth, ownership and genuine room to develop, whilst helping to shape the business and what it becomes next, get in touch!
